Calling Back

The start of this project came from an amazing experience I had as a child.
After sweeping the graves during the Ching Ming Festival, I had a high fever that was slow to go down. My family was very worried, so they asked a local goddess to perform a ‘soul-calling ceremony’ for me, with the aim of bringing back my soul, which had been lost in the cemetery, and restoring my health.

-Hand-painted
Since the story is set in traditional Chinese culture, I wanted to work with traditional Chinese paints and rice paper.
This was a big challenge because it was my first time to touch traditional Chinese painting and I encountered some difficulties with paper and mineral pigments. However, after practice, I was able to master the techniques and finally completed the following four paintings.

-Stone Plastic Clay Design
I was so fascinated by the illustrative output of this story that I went on to create a real-world ‘Underworld Story’ using stoneware clay.

-Digital Painting
Out of my love for digital painting, I also created four electronic illustrations.

This experience often comes to my mind, so I want to record it, not only as a record of the special culture of the region, but also as a remembrance of my deceased great-grandmother.
